About Percore

What is Percore? The daily perception practice, explained in full

Percore is a daily perception practice for iPhone. Four short exercises show or play something, take it away, and ask you to reproduce it — a colour, a pitch, a duration, a shape. You get an accuracy score for each round and a reading of how your senses are moving over time. This page is the complete, plainly stated account of what it does, what it costs, and what it does not claim.

In short

  • Percore is an iPhone app (iOS 16.4 or later) in the App Store's Education category. The daily practice is free and stays free.
  • The daily calibration is four sessions — Colour, Pitch, Duration, Shape — five rounds each, about two minutes in total. Everyone gets the same targets on the same day.
  • Percore Pro (US$39.99 a year with a seven-day free trial, or US$4.99 a week) unlocks practice in all seventeen modules, a personal ritual, the weekly reading and longer history.
  • Scores are accuracy from 0 to 100, computed from the measured distance between your answer and the target, and the formulas are published.
  • It claims to measure perception, not to improve intelligence, memory or focus. It is not brain training and it is not a medical tool.

What Percore is

Percore is built around one shape of exercise. Something is presented — a colour fills the screen, a single tone plays, a pulse runs for a while, a triangle sits on a grid — then it is taken away, and you reproduce it from memory with real controls: sliders, a draggable waveform, a held press, a shape you can move and turn. Then you see yours and the original side by side, with the measured distance between them. That comparison is the product. Everything else — the scores, the radar, the readings — is bookkeeping on top of it.

The app is made for people whose work rests on a sensory judgement they cannot quite explain: designers arguing about two greys, photographers who see a quarter-stop, musicians who hear a room. None of that is required. The exercises assume no training, and the free daily practice is the same for everyone.

The daily calibration

Each day has four sessions, in the same order, one per sense. Each session is five rounds. All four take about two minutes. The targets are the same for everyone on the same day, so today's session is comparable with yesterday's and with a friend's.

SessionSenseWhat happensScored by
ColourVisionA colour fills the screen for a few seconds, then disappears. You rebuild it with hue, saturation and brightness sliders.Distance in hue, saturation and brightness, normalised and averaged
PitchHearingOne sine tone plays once (roughly 140–760 Hz). You find it again by dragging a waveform; the pitch glides as you move.Cents — the musical distance between two pitches
DurationTimingA pulse runs for between about one and three and a half seconds, then stops. You press and hold for the same length.Error relative to the target length
ShapeSpatialA triangle sits on a grid at some position, rotation and size, then vanishes. You put it back.Position, rotation and scale errors, weighted 45 / 35 / 20

A missed day costs nothing but the day. There is no penalty, no streak guilt, and nothing expires. The exact scoring of each session is on the senses page and, in more detail, in How Percore scores.

The seventeen modules

The four daily sessions are the lead module of each sense. Behind them are thirteen more, reachable through practice, which is part of Pro. Every module is a real, scored exercise with the same memorise-recreate-compare shape.

SenseModules
VisionColour · Contrast · Brightness · Peripheral Vision
HearingPitch · Rhythm · Direction · Timbre
TimingDuration · Reaction · Tempo · Prediction
SpatialShape · Distance · Rotation · Motion · Balance
  • Contrast — tell apart subtle shifts in visual contrast. Brightness — judge and match light levels by eye alone. Peripheral Vision — what you notice at the edge of sight.
  • Rhythm — feel a beat, then play it back. Direction — locate a sound's direction by ear. Timbre — hear a sound's colour, then match how bright it is.
  • Reaction — respond the instant a signal appears. Tempo — match a pace, not just a duration. Prediction — anticipate timing before it happens.
  • Distance — judge how far apart two points really are. Rotation — read an angle and match it exactly. Motion — track something moving. Balance — sense equilibrium using the phone's motion sensors and correct for it.

What accumulates

Every session leaves a reading: a rolling average for that sense, how it has moved against your own recent weeks, and one plain written sentence about what changed. When there is nothing true to say yet, it says that. There is no single composite score on the home screen, because nobody can feel a blended number.

  • The radar — four axes, one per sense, drawn from your rolling averages. Free.
  • Self-relative, always — you are compared with your own history, never ranked against other people. A slip is shown in a muted tone, never in red.
  • Drift, not decay — leave a sense alone for a while and Percore lowers its confidence in the reading. It never lowers the reading itself.
  • Friends — add a friend by code and see each other's days side by side. There is no leaderboard, by design.

Free and Pro

The daily practice is free and is not a trial. Session and round scores, the streak, per-sense averages, the radar, the daily reading, achievements, friends and sharing are all free. Pro does not unlock any of them.

Percore Pro is US$39.99 a year, and the yearly plan begins with seven days free for an Apple ID that has not had a Percore trial before. There is also a weekly plan at US$4.99 a week, with no trial, for trying Pro without committing to a year — and the pricing page says plainly that a year of weekly billing costs far more than the yearly plan. Apple sets the equivalent in your currency. Subscriptions are managed through the App Store and can be cancelled there at any time.

What Percore does not claim

Percore measures something narrow and literal: how close your reproduction was to the target you were just given. It makes no claim about intelligence, memory, focus, or any benefit that carries over to work or life. It does not diagnose, treat or assess anything medical, and a low score on a colour or pitch session is not a hearing or vision test. The scores mean something only relative to your own series. This is the line that separates perception training from brain training, and Percore stays on the measured side of it.

Privacy and accessibility

The practice runs on your device, and without an account nothing from an exercise leaves your iPhone. The targets you saw and the answers you gave are never sent to the analytics provider — a guard in the app drops them before any event is sent. Percore does not sell data and does not build advertising profiles. With an optional account, your history is also saved to Percore's database so it survives a new phone. The privacy page lists everything collected and why.

Every exercise is operable with VoiceOver and respects Reduce Motion and Dynamic Type. Where an exercise cannot be meaningful for someone — the colour session for a person who cannot see the colour — the app says so rather than scoring badly and staying quiet about why.

Frequently asked

Is Percore free?

Yes. The daily practice — all four senses, your scores, streak, per-sense averages, the radar and the daily reading — is free and stays free. Percore Pro is an optional subscription for practice outside the daily ritual, the other thirteen modules, a personal ritual, the weekly reading and longer history.

Is Percore a brain-training app?

No. Brain-training apps claim that practising their games improves general abilities such as memory or attention. Percore claims only to measure how closely you reproduce a colour, a pitch, a duration or a shape, and to show you that over time. It is deliberate about not claiming more.

How long does Percore take each day?

About two minutes for all four senses. A single sense is five rounds, roughly half a minute. It is designed to be finished, not lingered in.

Is Percore available on Android?

Not at launch. The app is built with Expo, so Android is a realistic follow-up rather than a rewrite, but there is no date.

Who is Percore for?

It is written for designers, photographers, musicians, editors and anyone whose work rests on a sensory judgement. Nothing in the exercises assumes training, so it works the same for someone who has never thought about any of this.

Does Percore have a leaderboard?

No. Friends can see each other's days side by side, and the same daily targets make a direct comparison possible, but there is no ranking anywhere in the app.
