The four
The four senses
One page on each exercise: what it shows you, what you do with it, and exactly how it is scored. Nothing here is hidden from you inside the app either.

Colour
Vision
A colour fills the screen, then disappears. You rebuild it with hue, saturation and brightness — and find out which of the three you were actually reading.
- In the app
- A single colour, full screen, for a few seconds. Nothing else — no controls to fiddle with while you look.
- Three sliders: hue, saturation and brightness. You are rebuilding a colour, not picking one from a swatch, so the three dimensions come apart and you find out which one you were actually tracking.
- How it is scored
- Your hue, saturation and brightness errors are each normalised — hue over 180°, since that is the furthest two hues can be apart — and averaged. The result is an accuracy from 0 to 100.
Pitch
Hearing
A single tone plays once. You find it again by dragging a waveform, and the pitch glides under your finger as you move.
- In the app
- One sine tone, played once, somewhere between roughly 140 and 760 Hz. The frequency is never shown; showing it would be the answer.
- A waveform that is itself the control. Drag left for lower, right for higher, and the tone glides continuously as you move rather than stepping between notes.
- How it is scored
- Distance in cents — the logarithmic unit musicians use — so being 20 Hz out matters more down low than up high, exactly as it sounds. About an octave off scores zero.
Duration
Timing
Something breathes for a while and stops. You press and hold until it feels like the same length. No numbers, no clock — you only have the feeling of it.
- In the app
- A pulse with a low tone breathing in time with it, running for somewhere between about one and three and a half seconds, then silence.
- Press and hold anywhere until it feels like the same length. Releasing submits. There is no counter, no clock, and no way to count it out loud that will not lose you the round.
- How it is scored
- Error relative to the target length, so being a quarter-second late on a short interval costs more than on a long one — which is how it feels.
Shape
Spatial
A triangle sits somewhere on a grid, turned and sized. It vanishes. You move, rotate and scale it back to where it was.
- In the app
- A triangle on a grid, at some position, rotation and size, held under a slight veil for a few seconds.
- The triangle returns to the centre and you put it back: drag the body to move it, a handle to turn it, another to resize it. The handles travel with the shape.
- How it is scored
- Position, rotation and scale errors, weighted 45 / 35 / 20 — position is the thing people misjudge most, so it carries the most weight.
Start with one colour.
Two minutes tomorrow morning, and again the morning after. Within a week you will know whether this is a thing you want. That is the whole pitch.
